Vilquechico tracksite (Cretaceous of Peru)

Where: Puno, Peru (15.2° S, 69.7° W: paleocoordinates 17.4° S, 55.4° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Upper Member (Vilquechicho Formation), Maastrichtian (72.1 - 66.0 Ma)

• Originally assigned to late Campanian-early Maastrichtian by Jaillard et al. (1993) - regarded as coeval with the Maastrichtian El Molino Formation of Bolivia by more recent studies (e.g. Meyer et al. 2021)

•lower part of "Upper formation" of the group; Cmp-Maa boundary within this layer

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fluvial; bioturbated, ferruginous, red, yellow sandstone

• "15m-thick layer of massive, Fe-rich yellow sandstones (unit “e” of Newell, 1949), which exhibits scarce parallel- or cross-bedding, and abundant bioturbations. Its upper surface shows desiccation features, dinosaurian tracks, plant remains and bone fragments. It could represent fluvial sandy facies." Tracks in "the top surface of the thick, yellow to pink-coloured sandstone bed"

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: mold/impression, trace

Collection methods: surface (in situ),
