Puna Island (Pliocene of Ecuador)

Also known as Isla Puná

Where: Ecuador (2.8° S, 80.1° W: paleocoordinates 3.0° S, 79.3° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Pliocene (5.3 - 2.6 Ma)

• LITHOSTRATIGRAPHY: From an unnamed lithostratigraphic unit, for which lithostratigraphic relationships are not discussed. AGE: Authors state that the presence of certain extinct species suggest that a Pliocene age is more likely than a Pleistocene age. STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: Fossils occur in a silty sand, from an unknown part of the succession.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; unlithified, silty, carbonaceous sandstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Shallow water and sand beach types.
• LITHOLOGY: Silty sands, rusty-colored, containing lignitic debris, sometimes cross-bedded.

Size class: macrofossils
