La Scoabă (Cretaceous of Romania)

Also known as Scoaba; Sânpetru-Scoabă, Sibişel Valley

Where: Hunedoara, Romania (45.5° N, 22.9° E: paleocoordinates 32.6° N, 21.1° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Sînpetru Formation, Early/Lower Maastrichtian (70.6 - 66.0 Ma)

• lower part of the lower (but not basalmost) Maastrichtian (Csiki-Sava et al. 2016)

•"Several vertebrate remains were discovered at different stratigraphic levels during the recent years in the Scoaba locality....As FGGUB R.1957 was found as a loose element, at the base of the section, its exact provenance is unknown"

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fluvial; cherty/siliceous mudstone and lithified sandstone

• "Sedimentological studies...suggest the deposits were laid down in a braided fluvial setting and represent floodplain and channel deposits, respectively"
• "The Scoaba locality is situated in the lower part of the outcropping sequence, on the left bank of the Sibisel valley. It is represented by a 30 m thick rhythmic alternation of thick and laterally extensive sandstone bodies and pedogenetically modified, mainly reddish-brown siltic mudstones"

Size class: macrofossils
