Type specimens:

  • Diplocaulus magnicornis: AMNH 4539, a skull. Its type locality is Coffee Creek, 34 (Arroyo Formation), which is in a Kungurian terrestrial claystone/sandstone in the Arroyo Formation of Texas.
  • Diplocaulus limbatus: AMNH 4471, a partial skeleton (poorly preserved skull and lower jaws with vertebrae and part of the shoulder girdle). Its type locality is Coffee Creek, 34 (Arroyo Formation), which is in a Kungurian terrestrial claystone/sandstone in the Arroyo Formation of Texas.
  • Diplocaulus primigenius: CNHM (FMNH) UC 564. Its type locality is Craddock Bonebed, Brush Creek, 38 (Arroyo Formation), which is in a Kungurian terrestrial claystone/sandstone in the Arroyo Formation of Texas.
  • Diplocaulus pusillus: a specimen in the Alte Akademie, Munich, Germany (lost long ago), a skull.
  • Platyops parvus: CNHM (FMNH) UC 206, a skull. Its type locality is Craddock Bonebed, Brush Creek, 38 (Arroyo Formation), which is in a Kungurian terrestrial claystone/sandstone in the Arroyo Formation of Texas.
