Type specimens:

  • Hyphalosaurus lingyuanensis: IVPP V11075/BMNHC V398 (counterpart), a skeleton (nearly complete skull, mandibles, and well-preserved postcranial skeleton). Its type locality is Fanzhangzi, Lingyuan, which is in a Barremian/Aptian lacustrine horizon in the Yixian Formation of China.
  • Sinohydrosaurus lingyuanensis: BVC 398, conterpart of holotype of Hyphalosaurus lingyuanensis, a skeleton.
