Type specimens:

  • Plesiosaurus dolichodeirus: BMNH 22656, a skeleton (almost complete skeleton). Its type locality is Lyme Regis, Echinoceras raricostatum, which is in a Sinemurian marine horizon in the Charmouth Mudstone Formation of the United Kingdom.
  • Plesiosaurus homei:
  • Plesiosaurus macromus: OUMNH J.28587/1-57, a set of postcrania (partial postcranial skeleton comprising portions of limb and many vertebrae). Its type locality is Lyme Regis: Pinhay Bay (Lower Lias, general), which is in a Hettangian/Pliensbachian marine horizon in the United Kingdom.
