Type specimens:
- Proheptaconus patagonicus: MACN A52-218, a tooth (left M3). Its type locality is Gran Barranca - southern cliff of lake Colhué Huapí, which is in a Colhuehuapian terrestrial horizon in the Sarmiento Formation of Argentina.
- Proheptaconus trelewense: MACN 11453, a skull (poorly preserved skull with endocast and with broken left P4-M1 and right M1 and M3). Its type locality is Southern Cliff of lower Chubut River Valley, near Gaiman, which is in a Colhuehuapian paralic mudstone in the Sarmiento Formation of Argentina.
