Sister taxa: Caiman niteroiensis, Caiman pachytemporalis
Type specimen: UFAC-2507, a skull (nearly complete skull with both hemimandibles). Its type locality is Niteroi, which is in a Tortonian fluvial-lacustrine claystone/conglomerate in the Solimões Formation of Brazil.
