Derivation of name. The species name pays tribute to our late colleague and friend, Gilles Merzeraud (19652020), who established the stratigraphical section of Rio Guatemala from which the fossils described here originate.

Type specimen: LACM 162449, a tooth (right lower molar (m1 or m2)). Its type locality is LACM Loc. 8060, Río Guatemala, which is in an Oligocene lagoonal conglomerate in the San Sebastian Formation of Puerto Rico.

Ecology: ground dwelling herbivore

Distribution: found only at LACM Loc. 8060, Río Guatemala
