Type specimens:

  • Mesohippus westoni: Ottawa Mus6289, a set of teeth (a single superior molar, and two inferior molars, the latter in place in a part of the mandible.).
  • Mesohippus montanensis: AMNH 9662, a set of teeth (dP2-4, M1). Its type locality is Pipestone Springs, which is in a Chadronian terrestrial claystone in the Renova Formation of Montana.
  • Mesohippus praecocidens: Ottawa Mus. 6297, a tooth (an imperfect left upper molar).

Distribution:

• Eocene of Canada (4: Saskatchewan collections), United States (5: Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming)

Total: 9 collections each including a single occurrence
