Type specimens:
- Esthonyx bisulcatus: U.S.N.M. No. 1103, a mandible (left lower jaw with three molars, P3, and two associated incisors).
- Esthonyx acer: Its type locality is Almagre Arroyo (Cope), which is in a Wasatchian terrestrial horizon in the San Jose Formation of New Mexico.
- Esthonyx burmeisterii:
Ecology: ground dwelling herbivore
Distribution:
• Eocene of United States (162: Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming collections)
Total: 162 collections each including a single occurrence
