Type specimens:

• Pliohippus mirabilis: USNM 569, a partial skull (A fragment of the right maxillary containing the posterior two milk molars, and the first true molar partially calcified)
• Merychippus campestris: AMNH 9069, a partial skeleton (Upper molar- premolar series of the left side associated with the lower jaws fragments of skull, vertebrre, and portion of fore and hind limbs and feet. ). Its type locality is Pawnee Buttes (Upper Beds), which is in a Miocene terrestrial horizon in Colorado.
