Type specimens:

  • Lycaenodon longiceps: BMNH R5700, a partial skull (Anterior half of skull without lower jaws). Its type locality is Biesjiespoort, Victoria West, which is in a Wuchiapingian terrestrial horizon in South Africa.
  • Hipposaurus rubidgei: RC 20, a partial skull (Anterior two thirds of skull without lower jaws). Its type locality is Wellwood (Cistecephalus Assemblage Zone), which is in a Wuchiapingian terrestrial mudstone in the Balfour Formation of South Africa.
