Taxonomy
Osteolepis was named by Valenciennes (1829) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife-u D Fras-m Sepkoski's reference number: 502]. It is the type genus of Osteolepididae.

It was assigned to Dipteridae by Owen (1859); to Saurodipterini by Huxley (1861); to Osteolepidae by Woodward (1891); to Coelocanthiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Osteolepidinae by Borgen and Nakrem (2016); and to Osteolepididae by van der Laan (2019).
