Taxonomy
Xenosaurus was named by Gray (1856). It is extant. It is the type genus of Xenosauridae, Xenosaurinae.

It was assigned to Xenosaurinae by McDowell and Bogert (1954); and to Xenosauridae by Frank and Ramus (1996).
