Kennalestes was named by Kielan-Jaworowska (1968). It is the type genus of Kennalestidae.

(1979); to Kennalestidae by Kielan-Jaworowska (1981), Nessov (1997), McKenna and Bell (1997), Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004); to Asioryctitheria by Novacek et al. (1997), Wible et al.
