Hemitoma was named by Swainson (1840) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani R Sepkoski's reference number: 914]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Emarginulinae by Perrilliat (1972); to Emarginulinae by Squires (1987); to Emarginulidae by Wilson (1993); to Fissurellidae by Knight et al. (1960), Weisbord (1962), Ladd (1966), Short and Potter (1987), Todd (2001); to Euomphalina by Sepkoski (2002); and to Emarginulini by Bouchet et al. (2005).
