Pustulosa was named by Spencer (1951).
It was corrected as Pustulosina by Spencer and Wright (1966); it was reranked as the order Pustulosida by Blake (1989), Webster et al. (1999) and Sepkoski (2002); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Asteroidea by Blake (2018).
It was assigned to Phanerozonida by Spencer (1951) and Owen (1965); to Valvatida by Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Asteroidea by Blake (1989), Webster et al. (1999) and Sepkoski (2002).
