Tomiopsis himalayanicus was named by Waterhouse (1978). Its type specimen is Geol. Surv. India 7467 and is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Tomiopsis (Ambikella) himalayanicus by Waterhouse (1998); it was recombined as Ambikella himalayanicus by Waterhouse and Chen (2007).
