Cyrtlatherium was named by Freeman (1979). Its type is Cyrtlatherium canei.
It was assigned to Kuehneotheriidae by Freeman (1979); to Docodonta by Sigogneau-Russell (2003); and to Docodontidae by Sigogneau-Russell (2001) and Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004).
