Ptychomphalina was named by Fischer (1885) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife-u Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 797,1004]. It is the type genus of Ptychomphalinae.
It was reranked as Pleurotomaria (Ptychomphalina) by Perner (1907); it was synonymized subjectively with Mourlonia by Knight et al. (1960).
It was assigned to Pleurotomaria by Perner (1907); to Ptychomphalinides by Gordon and Yochelson (1987); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Ptychomphalinae by Bouchet et al. (2005); and to Mourloniides by Wagner (2023).
