Sauvagesia was named by Bayle (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-m K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 972].

It was assigned to Sauvagesiinae by Vokes (1980); to Hippuritoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Radiolitidae by Skelton (2013).
