Epiaeschna stauropolitana was named by Martynov (1927). Its type specimen is PIN 452/1, a hindwing (complete female hindwing), and it is an impression. Its type locality is Stavropol (PIN collection 452), which is in a Miocene terrestrial horizon in the Russian Federation.
