Taxonomy
Marmornectes candrewi was named by Ketchum and Benson (2011). Its type specimen is BEDFM 1999.201, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Quest Pit, east of Stewartby, which is in a Callovian marine mudstone in the Oxford Clay Formation of the United Kingdom. It is the type species of Marmornectes.

Benson 2011Longirostrine pliosaurid with seven autapomorphies: six, widely spaced premaxillary alveoli; teeth subcircular in cross-section with longitudinal enamel ridges that only extend to the base of the enamel on one axial tooth surface (i.e. either the mesial or distal surface, this cannot be determined from isolated teeth); squamosal bulb absent; paired posterior processes present on anterior cervical ribs; distal end of dorsal ribs expanded by rugose bone and subequal in diameter to the proximal end; undulating dorsal margin of scapular blade; clavicle with rod-like posterolateral process and two notches in its medial margin.
