Sesarmidae was named by Dana (1851). It is extant. Its type is Sesarma.

It was reranked as the subfamily Sesarminae by Rathbun (1909) and Karasawa (1993).

It was assigned to Grapsidae by Rathbun (1909) and Karasawa (1993); and to Grapsoidea by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Luque et al. (2017) and Schweitzer et al. (2023).
