Thalassina was named by Latreille (1826) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Thalassinidae.

It was assigned to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Thalassinidae by Karasawa (1993), Collins et al. (2003), Schweitzer et al. (2010) and Schweitzer et al. (2023).
