Protoplecia klafacki was named by Ansorge (1996). Its type specimen is LGA 892, an exoskeleton, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Klein Lehmhagen pit, Grimmen (LGA collection), which is in a Toarcian offshore shale in Germany.
