Nematocarcinus was named by Milne-Edwards (1881). It is extant. It is the type genus of Nematocarcinoidea, Nematocarcinidae.

It was assigned to Goneplacinae by Karasawa and Kato (2003); and to Nematocarcinidae by Poore and Ahyong (2004) and Schweitzer et al. (2023).
