Fournierechinus was named by Jackson (1929) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-l Sepkoski's reference number: 956]. It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Proterocidaris by Kier (1966).

It was assigned to Echinocystitoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Proterocidaridae by Thompson and Ewin (2018).
