Monophoraster was named by Lambert and Thiéry (1921) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l]. It is the type genus of Monophorasteridae.

It was assigned to Monophorasteridae by Durham (1955), Durham (1966); and to Clypeasteroida by Sepkoski (2002).
