Phanerosteon was named by Traquair (1881) [Sepkoski's age data: C l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Palaeoniscidae by Woodward (1891); to Palaeonisciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Phanerosteonidae by Schultze et al. (2021).
