Taxonomy
Emys benstedi was named by Mantell (1841). Its type specimen is BMNH 28706, a partial shell (the imperfect shell of a young individual), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Culand Pits, Burham, which is in a Cenomanian/Turonian basinal (carbonate) chalk/marl in the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Chelone benstedi by Owen (1842), Owen (1851), Lydekker (1889), Swinton (1934); it was considered a nomen dubium by Collins (1970); it was recombined as Cimochelys benstedi by Zangerl (1960), Hooks (1998).
