Protenodontosaurus was named by Pinna (1990) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn]. Its type is Protenodontosaurus italicus.
It was assigned to Protenodontosauridae by Rieppel (2000); to Placochelyida by Rieppel (2001); and to Placodontia by Sepkoski (2002).
