Dendrerpeton was named by Owen (1853). It is not extant. Its type is Dendrerpeton acadianum. It is the type genus of Dendrerpetontidae.
It was assigned to Labyrinthodontes by Roemer (1856); to Ganocephala by Owen (1860) and Owen (1861); to Labyrinthodontia by Steen (1934); to Dendrerpetontidae by Hay (1902) and Carroll (1988); to Temnospondyli by Gauthier et al. (1989) and Haubold et al. (2005); to Temnospondyli by Maddin et al. (2012); to Eutemnospondyli by Schoch (2013); and to Dendrerpetonidae by Carroll (1967) and Schoch and Milner (2014).
