Sinemydidae was named by Yeh (1963). Its type is Sinemys. It was considered monophyletic by Tong and Brinkman (2012).
It was reranked as the unranked clade Sinemydidae by Rabi et al. (2014) and Zhou and Rabi (2015).
It was assigned to Testudinoidea by Kuhn (1966); to Cryptodira by Joyce et al. (2004); to Centrocryptodira by Brinkman et al. (2008); to Pancryptodira by Rabi et al. (2014) and Zhou and Rabi (2015); and to Eucryptodira by Brinkman (2001), Tong and Brinkman (2012) and Ji and Chen (2018).
