Cerritosaurus was named by Price (1946). It is not extant. Its type is Cerritosaurus binsfeldi.
It was assigned to Ornithosuchidae by Romer (1956); to Proterochampsia by Dilkes and Arcucci (2012); and to Proterochampsidae by Cruickshank (1978), Carroll (1988), Trotteyn et al. (2013), Ezcurra et al. (2015) and Ezcurra (2016).
