Protospongia was named by Salter (1864).

It was assigned to Protospongidae by Henningsmoen (1952); to Protospongiidae by Henningsmoen (1958), Rigby et al. (1998); to Reticulosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hexactinellida by Bambach et al. (2007).
