Muraenesox obrutus was named by Stinton (1957). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Clifton Bank, which is in a Langhian marine marl in the Port Campbell Limestone Formation of Australia.
It was recombined as Congridarum obrutus by Schwarzhans (1985).
