Marsupites was named by Mantell (1821) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant-u]. Its type is Encrinites testudinarius. It is the type genus of Marsupitidae.
It was assigned to Uintacrinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Marsupitidae by Clark and Twitchell (1915), Rasmussen (1961) and Hess and Messing (2011).
