Oxypeltinae was named by Lacordaire (1868). It is extant.

It was reranked as the family Oxypeltidae by Cai et al. (2022).

It was assigned to Disteniidae by Crowson (1981); to Cerambycidae by Lawrence and Newton (1995); to Megalopodidae by Haddad et al. (2018); and to Chrysomeloidea by Cai et al. (2022).
