Pericyclus (Caenocyclus) was named by Schindewolf (1922) [Sepkoski's age data: C-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. Its type is Pericyclus (Caenocyclus) perisphinctoides.

It was reranked as Caenocyclus by Sepkoski (2002), Korn (2006), Furnish et al. (2009).

It was assigned to Pericyclus by Arkell et al. (1957); to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pericyclinae by Korn (2006), Furnish et al. (2009).
