Lepus idahoensis was named by Merriam (1891). It is extant. It is the type species of Brachylagus.
It was recombined as Brachylagus idahoensis by Lyon (1904), Nelson (1909), Kenner (1965), Dawson (1967), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Corbet (1983), Harris (1985), Wilson and Reeder (1993), Halanych and Robinson (1997), Ramos (1999), Ramos (1999); it was recombined as Microlagus idahoensis by Gureev (1964); it was recombined as Sylvilagus idahoensis by Grinnell et al. (1930), Orr (1940), Durant (1952), Miller (1976), Hall (1981), Cano‐Sánchez et al. (2022).
