Taxonomy
Mosasaurus dekayi was named by Bronn (1838). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sandy Hook, Atlantic Highlands, which is in a Maastrichtian marine horizon in the Navesink Formation of New Jersey.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Gallagher (2005).
