Keeneia was named by Etheridge (1902) [Sepkoski's age data: C Pn P Guad Sepkoski's reference number: 1130]. Its type is Keeneia platyschismoides.

It was assigned to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Turbonellininae by Knight et al. (1960), Wagner (2023).
