Taxonomy
Heleosauridae was named by Haughton (1924). Its type is Heleosaurus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Saurosternidae by Kuhn (1946); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Varanopidae by Reisz and Modesto (2007).

It was assigned to Eosuchia by Kuhn (1966); and to Neodiapsida by Benton (1985).
