Azolla stanleyi was named by Jain and Hall (1969). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Theodore Roosevelt Nat'l Park, near Medora, Billings Co., ND, which is in the Paleocene of shale the Sentinel Butte Formation North Dakota.
