Taxonomy
Murex foliata was named by Gmelin (1791). It is extant. It is the type species of Purpura.

It was recombined as Murex (Cerostoma) foliatus by Arnold (1903); it was recombined as Purpura foliata by Soper and Grant (1932); it was recombined as Ceratostoma foliata by Valentine and Meade (1961); it was recombined as Ceratostoma foliatum by Hendy (2021).
