Echinocorytes ovatus was named by Leske (1778).

It was recombined as Echinocorys scutata ovata by Kroh (2001).

Synonyms
  • Echinocorys schafferi was named by Kuehn (1930). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bruderndorf, which is in a Danian transition zone/lower shoreface sandstone in the Bruderndorf Formation of Austria.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Echinocorys scutata ovata by Kroh (2001).
  • Echinocorys sulcatus was named by Stuermer (1991).
