Scalaria hindsii was named by Carpenter (1856). It is extant.

It was recombined as Scala hindsi by Cooper (1894); it was recombined as Scala hindsii by Arnold (1903); it was recombined as Epitonium hindsii by Weaver (1949); it was recombined as Hirtoscala hindsii by Hendy (2021).

Synonyms
  • Epitonium contrerasi was named by Jordan and Hertlein (1926). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is C.A.S. Loc. 945, Turtle Bay, which is in a Pliocene marine sandstone in Mexico.

    It was recombined as Epitonium (Nitidiscala) contrerasi by Grant and Gale (1931) and Durham (1937); it was synonymized subjectively with Hirtoscala hindsii by Hendy (2021).
