Leptonyx bacula was named by Carpenter (1864). It is extant. Its type specimen is USNM 16284, a shell.

It was recombined as Leptothyra bacula by Oldroyd (1925); it was recombined as Homalopoma bacula by Clark (1931); it was recombined as Homalopoma (Homalopoma) baculum by Hendy (2021).
